Proper and Improper Names

July 12, 20263 min read

Just going to throw out some of the names we call things here in America and question them. Some of

you probably know the technical names of what I will be talking about, but the last time that I checked I

was about two quarts low on technical. I may have touched on some of these before, so just bear with

me. Some words just leave me confused. For instance why can something be underneath, but not over

neath, and where actually is neath located? I just don’t know. That being said here are some questions

about sports and other items of note.

Here is this: Most countries call Soccer, football. America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are with

us all calling it soccer. Where does this name come from? No one is socking each other or at least they

are not supposed to be. The players all do wear big socks, I don’t know, maybe that has something to do

with it. Now, consider boxing. That should be called soccer because there are two people out there

socking each other unmercifully. That would make sense. And then there is the boxing ring? Actually

should be called a boxing arena. Three ring circuses actually have the rings, that makes sense. Boxing

rings are square, not a ring. Now workers that work in factories who put their products in boxes, that

makes since. They are boxing. And some of them may possibly be putting rings in boxes, therefore

boxing rings.

Ok then there is rugby. Where did that name come from? Should it be played on a rug? But seriously folks,

I have never understood that game, much less the name. I don’t think that will ever catch on here. As

far as Rugby is concerned, in my opinion, a much better name would just be “Hog the ball.” Then there is

pickleball, I have discussed this before, nothing to do with pickles. Even spell check has trouble with that

one. And then why is hitting a ball with a club called golf? Nobody knows! Should be called club ball

and they do always have a clubhouse, not a golf house. Playing pool on a pool table??? A fun game, but

no water involved. Should be called pocket ball. Then there is fencing, a fun sport but don’t get the

name. Should be called limp sword stabbing. Roller skating makes sense, you are on rollers. Although

I don’t know where the name Rodeo came from, it could be I rode a bull and O am I sore. What they do

there makes a lot of sense. There is bull riding, calf roping, barrel racing by cowboys and cowgirls all

common sense. A good name for that could be Cowboy competition. Then there is American football.

Well this one is up in the air. A more accurate name would be “run and pass ball.” You get to kick the ball

much less than run or pass.

Then there are Lawyers and Doctors who practice Law and Medicine. How long do they have to practice

to be done with practicing and be fully qualified? That is kind of scary. Football players practice, Bands

have practice, Baseball has practice, but they then do the real thing. Oh well some things will always

just be weird.

Thought for the day: Have you seen the new tax forms this year? They are much more realistic. Where

your spouse signs it says “Accomplice”
