County Clerk Presents Record Archive Plan Amid Storage Concerns

May 14, 20261 min read

Aransas County Clerk Misty Kimbrough presented the annual county clerk archive plan, which was approved by commissioners to maintain existing records management and technology fees. The plan utilizes dedicated fees of $10 for records archiving and $10 for records management to fund the preservation of land and deed records without using general county funds.

During the presentation, Kimbrough highlighted significant challenges regarding the physical storage of county records. She reported that many documents are currently stored in a building containing environmental contaminants like mold and mildew. Kimbrough urged the court to prioritize repairs to the courthouse fire suppression system so that historical records can be moved to a more secure, centralized location. While legal counsel advised the court to limit the discussion to the specific archive plan on the agenda, the court voted to maintain the current fee structure to continue digital preservation efforts.
