The data center boom is coming to small-town Texas, and it's bringing its thirst with it. The state's 2027 Water Plan names groundwater as a primary target. The public comment window is already closing.

Texas is planning $174 billion in water infrastructure to fuel the state's data center boom, and rural communities with strong aquifers are squarely in the crosshairs. The public comment window on the Draft 2027 State Water Plan opened and closed with almost no notice to the people most affected. No mailers. No radio spots. Just a website posting and a legal filing most Texans will never see. By the time a groundwater contract is signed and a pipeline is permitted, it's too late to object.
