Aransas County Treasurer Set to Retire; Successor Appointed
Aransas County Treasurer Alma Cartwright will retire from her position effective May 22, 2026, after nearly 15 years in office. Cartwright originally joined the treasurer's office in 2009 before assuming the lead role in August 2011. During a meeting on May 11, the Aransas County Commissioners Court accepted her retirement and authorized an official letter of appreciation recognizing her years of managing the county's finances, payroll, and indigent health care programs.
To fill the upcoming vacancy, the court appointed Jamie Murphy as county treasurer effective upon Cartwright's departure. Murphy, who recently won the Republican primary for the seat and faces no challenger in the November general election, has been training under Cartwright for approximately one month. Murphy will serve the remainder of the current term before beginning her full elected term in January 2027.
In preparation for the transition, commissioners approved several resolutions updating the county’s investment policies and administrative access. Resolution R-09-2026 renewed the county's investment policy, while subsequent resolutions added Murphy and Assistant Auditor Tana Taylor as authorized investment officers. The court also updated authorized representatives for various investment pools, including the Lone Star Investment Pool, Texas Income Trust, Local Government Investment Cooperative, and Texas CLASS. Additionally, Murphy was designated as the responsible person for requesting juror pay reimbursements from the state.
