Commissioners Declare Local Disaster Due to Water Shortage

May 14, 20261 min read

Aransas County has declared a local state of disaster in response to emergency water shortage conditions. County officials noted that while they do not have the statutory authority to sell water directly, the declaration allows the county to activate its disaster plan and seek grant funding for long-term solutions, such as exploring deeper water levels.

The court also approved a joint resolution with neighboring counties to support regional coordination and sustainable water management. Officials expressed concern regarding the potential for local water wells to run dry due to high draw from surrounding areas. The regional agreement is intended to signal a unified front to state legislators in Austin when requesting financial assistance for water infrastructure.
